On December 15, 1845, at a meeting held at the schoolhouse, Daniel Black, Dock Strowbridge, Sam Rogers, Oliver Bristol, James Andrus, C, A. Shaw, Mathew Taisey, and Miles Beach selected the name Almont from a list of 27 proposed names. It was also agreed that the name would be used for both the village and the township.
