Carol Gertrude, “Gertie,” Park was born August 6, 1918 at Burley Hospital in Almont to Samuel Park (1879-1969) and Anna Miller Park (1881-1971). She joined older brothers Floyd “Sam” Sumner Park (1904-1978) and Murlin Sumner Park (1910-1919). She would be followed by younger brother, Roy Erwin Park (1920-1951).
Carol Gertrude Park Brooks (1918-2017) was known simply as “Gertie” to everyone. Only one name was necessary to identify her. For decades she wrote a column – “Memory Maple Meanderin’s” (from the farm) and “Country Cousin” (in town) – first for the Almont Times-Herald and then the Tri-City Times. Her stories of life in and around Almont contain a wealth of historical information about our community in the Twentieth Century.
In 1995, Gertie wrote the fifth book in this series – “The history of Almont’s Homecoming”. She and classmate Margaret Farley were Grand Marshalls for the 2000 Homecoming celebration.
