Library has 7,378 volumes – March 3, 1921

On March 3, 1921, librarian Mattie Johnson announced that after two years of operation, the library now had a collection totaling 7, 378 books.

In 1918, Henry Stephens’s son, Albert, donated the funds to construct in Almont the Henry Stephens Memorial Library, now the Almont District Library.

The building was constructed by A. L. Thayer.  The building was dedicated on April 1, 1918.  Judge Kendrick from Saginaw gave the opening address.

Albert Stephens’ donation only covered the cost of the building.  Community donations covered the costs of furnishings, books, and the landscaping of the grounds.

On Saturday. March 1, 1919, the Henry Stephens Memorial Library was opened to the public for the first time. On March 3, 1921, librarian Mattie Johnson announced that after two years of operation, the library now had a collection totaling 7, 378 books.
